(1) Endsheet can be enhanced to provide decorative elements for the book. The cover of a hardcover book is constructed from sturdy cardboard, wrapping around the inside face to create a polished edge. To ensure that the interior cardboard remains concealed when the book is opened, the end paper is affixed to both front and back covers. Without endsheet, the exposed interior of an open hardcover book would appear rough and unrefined. (2)Endsheet serves to secure the main pages to the book‘s cover. Prior to being bound into a cover, book pages are organized and joined together to form a cohesive page block. Once formed, the spine edge of this block is adhered to a narrow strip of backing material known as lining—a robust piece of paper or fabric that reinforces the spine area. The lining extends slightly on either side of the page block before being sandwiched between original cardboard and end paper, securely glued together.
